Forecast, Evaluate & Improve the Profitability of Your Next Facebook Ads Campaign

Magic Calculator Standard and Pro for E-comm, Lead-Based Funnels, and More

The Magic calculator was designed to model marketing efforts on the front-end: prospecting ads can be followed by retargeting ads, email campaigns, or both to drive first purchases and generate leads if you wish.

On this webpage, you will get acquainted with profit and Return on Investment (ROI) calculations and our new Magic calculator (Excel template, see details at the lower part of this webpage), which is far superior to any other Facebook Ads calculator we came across. You can download the ROI and Magic calculator at the moment without needing to opt in. At the bottom of the page, you will find the link to the detailed description of using the calculators and the basics of Facebook Ads measurement, and the announcement of the Pro version.

Getting successful with direct response marketing, in particular, with Facebook Ads, is getting harder and harder, year by year, because of the challenges of extreme competition and the diminishing results attainable with solely the pixel.

It is easy to burn a lot of money if you don’t understand the relationship between ad settings, user behavior, and numbers. In competitive industries (most), you have little or no chance of becoming successful if you don’t plan, forecast, measure, and evaluate. All of your decisions regarding setting up new ads or improving existing ones should be based on measurement.

These motivated us to develop a series of calculators, which help to:

  • Forecast the results of newly planned campaigns.
  • Evaluate past and running campaigns.
  • Shows the interrelationship of parameters, conversions rates, and other KPIs, to know where you should make the biggest efforts to make improvements.
  • Calculate KPIs Facebook Ads can’t, particularly profit and Return on Investment (ROI), so that you belong to the TOP 10% of advertisers who know if their campaigns are truly profitable or not.

We will explain the usage of our awesome new tool, called Magic calculator, and the basics of Facebook Ads measurement so that you can use it confidently and for FREE!

Before that, you can download a small calculator (without the need to opt-in) to see how easy it is to calculate profit and ROI with our method.

The Magic calculator is way better than any other we could find on the net. Even the most praised calculators contain a lot of errors, especially when it comes to calculating KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). And that can lead to very costly mistakes when advertising.

Prospecting ads are rarely profitable. Therefore these should be followed by:

  • retargeting ads
  • lead-based campaigns
  • or a combination of the above two

The calculator is suitable for forecasting results for all the above situations, which extends the calculator’s applicability well beyond e-commerce.

Some other benefits of using the calculator:

  • You will see the huge potential in setting up email autosequences for those who have opted-in.
  • You may still need retargeting on top of emails.
  • You will make a big step towards understanding Facebook Ads measurements and its vast potential to make better decisions about spending your money on advertising.

Although compact, the calculator is powerful and can help make sound decisions before starting an advertising campaign and while running the ads. It can be exceptionally precious when you start a new product introduction project. It is also useful when evaluating past campaigns.

The calculations will be relevant to a wide range of funnels and products, whether physical or digital products, with a direct sales approach or through nurturing the potential customers for an extended period. Remarketing can be done through retargeting ads, email sequences, or even a combination.

People tend to either concentrate on prospecting and retargeting ads or collecting email addresses (sometimes utilizing organic traffic) and sending prospects lots of emails. However, in many cases, you miss a huge opportunity not using both approaches in parallel. That is, remarketing can be done through retargeting ads, email sequences, or even a combination.

Understanding the full complexity of Facebook Ads measurement and advertising may take years. Nevertheless, I now explain several complicated concepts in a way that is easy to understand. However, it can’t replace a complete course on Facebook Ads advertising and measurement.

Although there is a separate webpage explaining our lean approach to digital marketing, rest assured that even this small calculator is largely inspired and affected by lean thinking. Our lean approach aims to run direct response campaigns as profitably and efficiently as possible.

The leading developer of the calculators (Robert K. Veresegyhazy), who has also written two ebooks presented on this website, has a diverse background. He is a Harvard Business Review author (download paper from here), an internationally acclaimed management consultant, who worked in a dozen countries, former CEO of a public foundation, Dr. univ. in physics, lean and measurement expert. Read more about our team and the developer (About Us, The Measuring Guy).

However, one must be aware of some limitations to using this calculator. For example, some complicated funnels and back-end sales are not included. You can find a big brother of this calculator in the webshop, which is even more capable. However, the best is if you start with this calculator.

That is so important that I have to repeat it. Read this webpage until the bottom while you have your Magic Calculator open in a spreadsheet program or application and then the next page (Using the Magic Calculator – Including a Crash Course in Facebook Ads Measurement). If you don’t find this calculator really useful (which I doubt), then purchasing the Pro version or the other calculator (called All-in-One) is of no use to you. However, if your only complaint is the limitations of the small calculator, then go ahead with the Pro version and the All-in-One calculator (see the details at the bottom of this webpage and on the Info worksheet of the calculator you have downloaded).

Did you experience any technical issues regarding the Excel files? See the next insert with a color background.

In general, when applying lean thinking and the Lean Startup method to direct response marketing, we aim to win big with a new product in three steps. The first is finding problem/solution fit; the second is finding product/market fit. You can read about these on other pages and posts.

With this calculator, we inherently presume that you are over with the first two steps. That means a lot of hard work might be behind you, and now you have a product (or products) ready to sell. You know and tested your market and have a collection of creatives and other marketing elements that proved to be well received by the prospects.

Therefore this and most other calculators are best used right after the second phase (product/market fit) when we start to scale up (third phase) and want to make many sales as profitably as possible.

However, you can use this calculator at any phase to get rough estimates and check the planned campaigns’ feasibility.

Still, we have to be aware of the phenomenon of diminishing returns. That means if our market size is limited, we will gradually exhaust our market even with many creatives and other campaign elements. It also very much depends on the size of the budget we use. Therefore you decide to use numbers in this calculator, which represent an early stage situation when the results are the best, or with a large budget, you can use average numbers, which take into account the case when the market starts to get exhausted, and conversions rates decrease.

After this introduction, let’s see the calculator’s sections and numbers.

Before that, download the small ROI calculator template, and open it in any version of Excel. Next, download the Magic Excel file.

Most of the cells are protected from changing to avoid breaking the calculator (and making unauthorized modifications hard). However, you can always inspect the calculations, change column width and do basic cell formattings, such as changing the currency or the number of decimals.

The calculators work well in all versions (free and paid) of Excel and compatible programs and apps. Unfortunately, we can’t recommend Google Sheets this time due to its limitations and several compatibility issues, but the free online version of Excel works very similarly and works better. If you have ever used Google Sheets, it will take only a minute to start using the free online version of Microsoft Excel. You can also use your mobile phone through two Microsoft apps, allowing you to work even offline. Part of the “magic” is the What-If (Goal Seek) analysis. You will need a paid version of Excel or the free LibreOffice for that purpose. More details about spreadsheet programs and versions are in a blog post.
This blog post can also be helpful if you experience any technical issues regarding downloading and using the files.

Troubleshooting: There were hundreds of successful downloads in the past few days. However, you can still run into technical issues regarding downloading or using the calculator. For example, some operating systems got confused regarding the extension of the files. You can safely ignore such a warning, as the files were double-checked that are genuine XLSX files. Still, do you have an issue? Write a message on Facebook, through the Contact form or comment on the ad or our Facebook page, and we will try to help.

Any other feedback or question is also welcome!
