The Measuring Guy

Hi,

My name is Dr. Robert K. Veresegyhazy, the principal developer at HPC Consulting Ltd and author of the two eBooks presented on this website.

I have a diverse carrier history being measuring the common element.

Following the university, I worked as an experimental physicist. I developed a computerized measuring system for spectroscopic studies of compound semiconductors. That system served me well, providing lots of data I could use to write my dr. univ. thesis. I also published regularly the results in leading international journals (do a Google search like this: “R. Veresegyhazy”).

That was followed by working in the United Kingdom for two years on a project sponsored by a high-tech Defense Industry supplier. My job was to write computer programs to simulate ultra-high-speed semiconductor devices used in stealth aircraft (among others).

As my next job, I served for five years as the CEO of the Hungarian Productivity Center (HPC) which was co-sponsored by the Japanese and the Hungarian Government. There (and partly in Japan) I started to pick up lean management and productivity measurement know-how working together with Japanese consultants.

At that time I could participate in a summer school in the marvelous King’s College, at the University of Cambridge. The conference dinner was served in a medieval Chapel. The dinner was followed by a key-note lecture of the last living member of the team of W. Edwards Deming, a world-famous professor and, consultant. Deming had a huge role in helping Japan to evolve as a highly developed industrial nation. “In 1960, the Prime Minister of Japan (Nobusuke Kishi), acting on behalf of Emperor Hirohito, awarded Deming Japan’s Order of the Sacred Treasure, Second Class. The citation on the medal recognizes Deming’s contributions to Japan’s industrial rebirth and its worldwide success /Wikipedia/”. Not bad for an American just 15 years after Japan’s devastating defeat by the USA.

Deming is also famous for praising and disseminating the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) management cycle. That is one of the most important principles and tools of lean practitioners. An adaptation is widely used by lean startups, as well. Consciously or subconsciously even digital media marketers use that. That is the heart of our social media ads management and measuring system, too.

In 1999 I was elected to the board of the European Association of National Productivity Centres to represent Central and Eastern European countries.

My carrier after HPC continued as a management consultant. I have now more than 20 years of practice as a consultant, trainer, and coach in a dozen countries. I consulted multinational companies, SMEs, governmental and non-governmental organizations – several times as a consultant of the Council of Europe. The companies were big and small, pharmaceutical, car manufacturing, and space industry companies, among others. I have a broad portfolio including strategic management, business analysis, management dashboards, kaizen, lean and digital marketing.

In my consulting carrier measurement was always numero uno. Based on that with my partners, we could manage to save millions of dollars for companies by eliminating waste and improving their performance. Interestingly enough, my most successful year was 2010 when we were in a deep economic crisis. In that year I made the price of a decent detached house in the green outskirts of the capital. However, that was hard work, flying among four countries throughout the whole year. Although I like traveling (see below), my biggest dream was at that time to sleep in my own bed.

Before that time I initiated and co-managed perhaps the biggest lean management survey ever transacted in Central and Eastern Europe (organized by Deloitte Touche).

In 2011 I got a phone call from the editor-in-chief of the Hungarian edition of the prestigious Harvard Business Review to write a paper about Japanese methods (kaizen and lean). That included another benchmarking survey I developed and managed not long ago, this time involving automotive part suppliers.

The paper is downloadable from HPC Consulting’s website in Hungarian. The site has a short English section, as well.

2011 was also the year when I started to get involved with digital marketing, particularly with Google Ads (Google AdWords at that time). The first project immediately landed for HPC Consulting a big consulting project which lasted several years with varying intensity.

In 2017 a friend asked me to help selling his stocks of healthy shoes in Hungary. Beccii Ltd. was founded. I set up my first webshop (footwear outlet) and advertised successfully on Facebook until 2021 when we ran out of stock. 2017 was the time I developed the first version of my digital media measurement system. It united data from several sources including Facebook Ads, Google Ads, Google Analytics, and Woocommerce. I could maintain Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) close to 10 for years.

I am in the 4th edition of the Who is Who in Hungary book.

My hobby is traveling. So far I have visited about 50 countries in four continents. Occasionally I visit my daughter who was born in England, raised in Hungary, and now lives in Scotland.

However, my favorite holiday destination is Greece. I can’t count how many times I have visited this country (I particularly love the seaside and the islands), last year twice.

Sometimes I even pack my laptop and move my “office” to a small hotel room overlooking the sea.

Gaining location independence is a strong motivation for me. That is why I shift my carrier in the direction of lean startups and digital marketing, including product development and consulting. With my know-how, I would like to assist as many people as possible gain financial, time, and locations independence.
